sponge question

So I found this sponge at my house. How do I know if its safe to put in my tank for a sponge filter??

im not sure to be honest... in my opinion i would not use it, just because you cant be sure it has not been treated with any chemicals....if it comes in a package, then just read and make sure it has not been treated to be mold resistant or flame resistant. i wouldn't take the chance though, especially when you can go to somewhere like Walmart and they have cheap bags of foam or polyester that is safe for filters and fish.
 
Yeah, any sort of trace chemicals that could be on it could kill your fish. A new one if pretty cheap and worlds safer. I used craft foam from JoAnn Fabric and its working fine. If you buy a new sponge read the label carefully to make sure it hasn't been treated with anything.
