In short, extra filtration won't allow you to increase stocking levels at all. Also, plants CAN help, but only if you have a large amount of them that are fast growing. Most people don't have enough plants in their tanks to make a noticeable difference.

Filtration really isn't a means of adding more fish. They still don't wanna be crammed. My 36g:

8 barbs
4 DG
1 rubbernose pleco
1 snail

And this is at fully stocked according to aqadvisor
