i cant take my lid off or my balas will jump, its happend before.

I have swords and they also jump, so I cannot take my lid off complely either, but during our heat wave (it's been 36'C/100F during the day for 2 weeks), I have had to have the lights on less, and when they are on, I keep the lid open a crack so the heat from the lights have somewhere to go (not into the water). It's worked and water during heat wave was steady at 28'C (too warm, but steady so ok).

This said, can you prop the lid open somehow?

You could try using some eggcrate as a lid. The air can get in but the fish cannot get out.

yes there is a crack at the back of my tank about an inch and a half the whole length of the tank, and i might try and use the eggcrate, but it did rain last night and i brought alot of cool air in. i have the fan running on it all day and it had brought it down to just over 26, so hopfully it will stay that way.

also, water you add to replace evaporation does not count as a water change. ;)
