I am making a DIY sump (its kind of a wet dry filter but I dont know if there is any difference) anyway, I was wondering if there is a certain amount of gallons that it has to be or what. The tank is 125 gallons. Any help is appreciated!

what are you using this sump for? will you have a skimmer in it, and a refugium as well? if it's just to increase water volume a little and hold your heaters and such, a 30 is fine.
you really have to figure out what your needs are.

Totes work great, just make sure it can hold the weight of the water. If it's a weaker tote double it up.

I'd avoid plastic numbers #1, #3, #6, and #7 as they can leach into the enviroment.

Usually you want a sump about equal to 25%-50% of your main tank.

i would use the 55 i think you already have, if you can fit it in the stand. just glue in a few partitions and your good to go. i would not trust a thin, walmart, plastic tote. also, you are going to want to see into it it. glass sides would be nice, especially if you plan on putting it in your stand.

It's an Iron stand so I will have to see what I will be able to do
This is what the stand looks like.
