Sumps- how do they work?

It's a tank that's separate from your display. Water drains from the display and into the sump and then gets pumped back into the tank.

Benefits
  1. It can basically be turned into a big filter
  2. Added tank water volume
  3. Can keep pregnant livebearers if you add in a refugium section
  4. Can also keep stressed or injured fish safe and separate if there's a refugium section
  5. Keep visible equipment such as heater out of the tank

Cons
  1. Cost
  2. Chance of failure
  3. Added weight

Imho, they are overrated for fresh water but almost necessary for salt.
