My question is do these decrease the quality/effiency of the lighting. I'm trying to cram a couple 24" shoplights under my 20g L hood and since T-8 bulbs are skinnier it would be easier to use those. The shoplights come with T-12 endcaps thats why I would need the converters.

you buy different endcaps to accommodate ta8'sa. on the ballast of the shop light it should list all the different combinations of bulbs the ballast can safety power so use that as a guide to get the right amount of ta8 bulbs, as well as their power rating. home depot/lowe's sells different endcaps so it should be pretty easy to wire up once you find out how many bulbs the ballast can safety drive.

If they are standard endcaps, in other words not water proof ones, then they will accept T-8's or T-12's in most cases.. the pin arangement is exactly the same on the duel pin bulbs of the two sizes.. HTH
