I don't understand your question. The life span of the aquarium isn't dependent on its housing. Its dependent on the life form inside the housing.

unless its a cheap 55 gallon and ya have alot of vibrating pumps which will weaken the silicone and make it leak

If the tank is properly maintained and not abused I would say a tank would last well over 5 years with out problems. Your biggest issue would be the possible detrieation of teh sylicon.

I have a 20 gal walmart kit that is now saltwater that I got back in 96/97 timeframe. And I have not had any issues. Its even been moved 3 times.

If you get an acrylic tank it is guaranteed on leaks for life.
