I have a tank that is 30 inches wide 18 inches tall and 12 inches front to back. How many gallons is that?

Standard 29 (28) gallon tank, actually a little less though since you're measuring the outside edges. Add substrate, ornaments, etc. and you'll actually have closer to 20 gallons of water.

So....should i calculate my chemicals on 20 gallons or 30? I say this because after set up I may be only looking at a 20g volume

I would base is on 30gal. Maybe use just a little less than a 30gall dose

Chemical dosage depend on water volume, not theoretical tank size.
