To filter, or not tp filter...that is the question!!

Ok, so in really new to the aquarium thing. I'm approaching a month with fish, and the instructions for my tank said to change the filter every 4-6 weeks. However, on here, I've read where some people say not to ever change your filter. Is this true? What do you suggest?

Don't change your filter cartridge, you'd throw away all the bacteria you've waited so long to establish. The only time you'd throw it away is if it is literally falling apart, and even then you'd add a filter in front of it to seed from your old filter then replace the old one. If it is dirty clean it in the same water you got from the tank during a water change.

+1, don't throw them away. To clean them all you have to do is swish them around in tank water.
