Could you post a picture of the tank to see what you have going on?
No i had wc panduro..
Not to be rude, but There is a Huge difference between wild caught fish and captive bred ones!!! No wonder yours were such killers.
Right? Or do you think mine will still turn out a bit crazy?
What would be a good substitute for them?
Sinibotia said 3/4 of her ram pairs were killers...
That was not my intention, My original question was whether 4 pairs of dwarf cichlids were to many. I was not sure, and you all chimed in, and I changed my plan to 2 pairs, and said I'd try it out-- These fish are not going to kill each immediately! They are all juveniles, very young; acquired from local breeders.
What I don't understand is there is lots of cover, heavily planted, and yet this tiny fish is going to kill all the inhabitants!?!? I've been keeping fish for a long time, These are my first cichlids, I've had them in separate tanks for several weeks, BUT this sounds like a lot of BS to me! IMO
The difference between wc and tank bred is water critieria.(period).
Fish are fish.
Apistos and rams belong in different temps as mentioned.
7degrees c is a large swing.....
Both fish also claim the same territory.
Without many line of site breaks and frequent re arranging I don't see multiple pairs working out for too long.
29 is TIGHT for 2 pair of anything if they breed.....
Depending on tank temp my money goes on the Apistos winning...

This is what I was basing my research on, as this is a source I trust. They say under behavior and compatibility, that WC and TR fish behave very differently, of course water criteria is also different.
I don't understand the temperature thing, the range for the ram and the apisto is 23-29C, which means that should not be an issue. This tank is at ~26C/78F.
I understand that they both occupy the same territory, however this is a planted tank with lots of caves, so I THOUGHT it would be fine.
What would YOU do?
1) all ram, (how many though?)
2) all apisto(ditto)
3) 2 Rams and 2 panduros; (all male, or all females)
4)????
I appreciate the help
2 pair of either apisto or GBR in a 29 will lead to one pair IMO...
Ask me how I know?
What about 2 and 3?
Also just curious, what would happen if you had 4 of one sex in this size tank?
There is always a strong chance of having a dominant pair when only two pair exist like if you were keeping only 2 of one type fish(not paired).Do you mean the 1 pair will kill the other?
How big is your tank with all those Rams?
What about 2 and 3?
Also just curious, what would happen if you had 4 of one sex in this size tank?
2m 3f panduro????
