imo, if its an emergency situation, then yes, but I wouldn't suggest long term..

Sad. Alive, but I doubt thriving.

But then as soon as it was warm enough, she put them into a big pond. It was that, or let them turn into fish sicles during the Alaskan winter. I think it was the lesser of two evils.

There are pond heaters... It sounds complicated and a lot of work for fish in a pond in Alaska. Does she have to do that every winter or was it a transitional thing?

I don't know, I never paid attention, that was before I got into fish tanks.
