Is anyone using an Ultraviolet Sterilizer in a freshwater fish and plant tank? I was thinking about getting one but wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with them.

Thanks,

they are not needed in most cases. if you did have it all you would need in most cases is it on a few hours a week.

Almost never needed. I had a friend who had a terrible problem with green water (free-floating green algae) in one of his tanks and setting up a UV sterilizer did the trick when nothing else seemed to work for him. But under normal circumstances, a UV sterilizer isn't needed and even cheap ones are a bit pricey.

i've had fresh water tanks for 2 years now and haven't ever need a uv sterilizer.
only reason i have ever seen a need for one is as JohnPaul stated to clean up really bad green water.
