I just recently got rid of my undergravel filter that I had for years and replaced the gravel with pool filter sand. My tank is 29 gallons and I'm pretty sure the HOB waterfall filter I have was just a cheap one from walmart rated for tanks up to 30 gallons.

So anyway, I think its time I upgrade that filter since it will be the only one in the tank now. I have read that you want one that is rated for atleast double your tank size. I was looking on amazon (since i have alot of gift card credit to use there) and noticed that the Marineland Emperor and Marineland Penguin filters are both discounted pretty good.

Can any recommend if either of these filters are pretty good or recommend another brand?

Amazon links to filters:

Emperor: Amazon.com: Marineland Emperor Power Filter Up to 50-Gallon, 280 GPH: Pet Supplies

Penguin: Amazon.com: Marineland Penguin Power Filter, 50 to 70-Gallon, 350 GPH: Pet Supplies

My favorites are AquaClears.
Personally I hate the bio wheels. Great idea, but kind of a pain in RL.

I think the first one would work ok.

I'd go with an Aquaclear 70; they are much more customizeable. The bio wheels are overrated IMO and the cartidges with the carbon are limiting. You can fill the Aquaclear with anything you want and it comes with a sponge, ceramic rings and carbon (personally I'd ditch the carbon and add another sponge).

Dont get a biowheel. I've used mine for A few months, took it apart. Then I go back and want to use it and it's broke. It sits for a little while longer, I want to use it now, and it worked for an hour, then quit again. Not reliable IMO. AquacleAr all the way :)

Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and ordered the aquaclear 70.
