I got a new betta fish and I am pretty sure he has velvet disease. He also has new black spots. How do I treat this? Would Bettafix by API cure it?

I don't believe so. That is a medication for bacterial and fugal issues. Velvet is a parasite. The Bettafix might help after the velvet is cured to prevent secondary infections from forming but I would use API's General Cure first to kill off the parasite. Also, keep the fish in the dark as Velvet is believed to also survive through photosynthesis ( which is how it gets it's golden color. )
