My CT Betta who resides in Tank 1 (see sig line), had velvet a little over a month ago. He was qt'd for about 2 weeks before returning him to the tank and since then he has been fine. This morning I noticed he was hiding for long periods of time in the cave. Same thing this afternoon. When I roused him, he came out and and started flashing. I also noticed his anal fin beginning to clamp. Same symptoms as last month.
Pwc yesterday (I do a weekly 20%, but yesterday did a bigger than usual change and vacuum about 35-40%), water parameters are as follows:
Temp: 77F
Ammonia: 0
NitrItes: 0
NitrAtes: 5.0
pH: 7.2
During the last go around none of the other fish contracted the velvet. All the other fish seem fine today. I've qt'd the Betta and started treatment.
It was my understanding that the parasite that causes velvet will die off if there is no host. So, where does it come from? I've not introduced any new fish and everyone has been healthy.
