I'm getting conflicting information on softened water from lfs and reference materials on the effects of softened water. I have had no problems with mature fish in my sons tank but would like to start a planted tank of my own and am not sure what to plan for. If I can't use softned water the plants may take more effort than I'm prepared for........Thanks in advance for advice on this subject

If you use Potassium Chloride in your softener instead of the regular salt it's not near as bad for the tank and will actually help to provide some Potassium for the plants. Otherwise it's best to bypass the softener for your tank water.
