Cheato algae for short. It's a macro algae that absorbs nutrients like nitrate. It grows and needs to be pruned every so often but it helps remove nitrate from the system.

Pruned as in trimmed? Not need or used for ANYthing else? How do I start establishing a sump to grow copepodes and what not..?

it's not needed for anything besides nutrient removal. pods live and breed in the algae also, but they do in live rock too, so you can grow a pod population without it.
yes, pruned as in grab a hand full every so often and sell it/give it away or toss it in the trash.
as for the sump question, just put some live rock in your sump. pods will do the rest.
