what is base rock?

okay so I was searching through the threads on rock, and then I realized that I really had no idea what the difference between base rock and live rock is. is base rock just dead live rock? or is it live rock that has only a little "liveness" (is that even a word?) in it? im confused.

Yup, pretty much. Just a cheaper alternative to live rock. If seeded, it will become live over time.

Even if you have LR it is best to use base rock as a first layer since you are going to bury it with some sand anyway.
