What is this used for?

Hey AA,
I bought my tank and this was included. Don't know what it is used for, but I'm sure one of you can point me in the right direction. It came with a Hawkeye 201 airpump with a short black tube that fits into the open tube of the unknown cube. What is this used for and what is it called?

Old school corner filter. Basically a sponge filter in a box.

Yep, it is a sponge filter. I had almost a similar thing.
