hey i was wondering what this algae that dies during the night with the lights off and during the day grows back to cover the glass and sand. it's a pain! i

n the morning it is very faint patch that looks...dead i guess.

my tank is 7 months old. everything seems fine.

if i add calcium will it help get rid of it?

i think my phosphates are a little high, they usualy are. bringing them down will help, but wat will kill it??? tia!

wat will kill it???

Not sure what color the algae is but if brown, it's diatoms usually caused from silicates in the water. If red, then it's cyanobacteria and PO4 will definately be the issue. Both silicates and PO4 typically come in through the use of tap water and/or certain foods. By the looks of it this may be a newer set up and if so it takes time for these algaes to subside and is a natural stage of the process.

thanks...it's been natural for about a month now. this algae stinks to clean. so no particular chemical will help get rid of it? im using r/o, maybe i need to replace it's filter. do you know of any sites with info on water change set ups. i have a lengthy and rather dirty set up for now.

I would never reccomend an additive for something like this. Let it run it's course if a newer set up or if you suspect impurities, track down the source and eliminate it. That's you best solution.

Definately a good place to start. What's the TDS?

Post what you currently do and you should get many suggestions.
