Hi all,

I just got back from my LFS after purchasing some fish. Unfortunately they are now closed.

When I’ve gone to float the bag, I’ve found there is a random stowaway fish in there with the ones I purchased. Googling suggests it’s some kind of rainbow fish?

Just wondering what to do with it? I’m a bit reluctant to just stick it in my tank when I don’t really know what it is. I also assume it needs a school, which clearly I don’t have.

Should I keep it in a mini tank overnight and try to return it tomorrow?

It reminds me of this genus of fish, Pseudomugil which is like you mention a Rainbow fish.

When it isn't as stressed you might be able to match it up with a variety. Does it have blue eyes?

Not sure, it could be a young or stressed or young and stressed Pseudomugil furcatus. And yes those need lots of friends to live a happy life. There are a large number of species. So many beautiful fish.

Surely the fish store would switch it out for you??? If you contact them, you may check and see which tankmates were in with, or in the next tank over, I think they are pretty good jumpers.

What other fish did you get at the fish store?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I was buying otocinclus, so not really a comparable species. It did indeed have a very blue eye but I think it was going pale from stress.

Fortunately, I was able to put it in a small QT overnight and return it the next day. I think it will be happier now it’s back with its own kind.

Thanks again.
