It depends on the light needs of the plant. If you put something like java fern in a lot of shade, it would continue to grow. However, no med to high light plants would flourish if they did not receive adequate lighting.
 
exactly the answer i wanted. so things like anubius and javas would do good in the shady parts of the aquarium?
 
Definitely. If you want any other plant ideas check out this link to PlantGeek.net and look for low to low-med light plants. These should do great in the spot you have for them.
 
anybody know if that little plant is a smaller apologeton? and if i can take it off and plant it or if i should just let it be?
