Hello,

I have noticed a lump on my male platy's tail. It is about the size of a small rice grain and is at the base of the tail. I haven't noticed him acting any different than he usually does other than spending the night in a temple decoration.

My tank is about a year old and is 10 gallons. There has been an outbreak of algae lately. Male Platy (that's his name - creative, I know) is the only fish in the tank.

Recent changes to the tank: I added two plastic plants about a week ago and removed a dying live plant. Maybe the plastic plant has a disease on it? It was previously used in a tank where there was disease, but I cleaned it very well.

Any ideas about what this could be and how to cure it would be appreciated. Thanks! :thanks:

Hi Dragon.goby,

Yes, his mouth is a little white, but it's been that way for over a month now. I don't think its causing any problems. The lump on the tail appeared a few days ago.

I saw Male Platy hiding in the temple decoration yesterday. He eventually came out, but I think the white bump is starting to affect behavior. I haven't noticed any changes in the bump itself. Any ideas?

Is there a chance that he may of been injured by another fish or decoration?
If so it might be getting infected, and you could always try a tail and slime coat repair product such as API stress coat.
I don't know if it will fix it for sure but it shouldn't hurt them.

I put in some stress coat and did a 50% water change. I think it's helping : The white spot seems to be fading. Thanks!
