Hi,

so I have this small 5 gallon right under a window. The sun hits it so well that algae is growing plentiful. I would still like some lighting for the evenings though. I want it to be relatively cheap (I might be using this large scale for multiple studies) and I'm new to the whole DIY thing. Heres what I saw the other day at Lowes, let me know what you think.

Would it work for standard lighting in a planted aquarium? open to examples/suggestions/ideas. Thanks in advance!:thanks:

That would work.
You could also take a look at this: https://m.lowes.com/pd/Bayco-150-Watt-Incandescent-Portable-Work-Light/3122291 Not as pretty but paired with a 13W or 23W 6700K twisted CFL bulb, it's a pretty effective light.

Thanks! I think I'll pick up on of those. Although its not as pretty I am mostly looking for practicality. These tanks would be set up more for studies than for viewers. Plus its nice when the plants are lush and green. I really appreciate the answer!
Just out of curiosity, have you ever used something like this and how was the tank set up? what did you use for the cover (if anything?)

:thanks: have a wonderful day!

I have not used one for a smaller container as a primary light but I have used them on a 20g tank as supplemental lighting. They generate a small (negligible) amount of heat. See below.
A desk lamp (the type with a swivel neck) that accepts standard light bulbs would work as well.
