wondering about sponge filters

I dont see a lot of people talking about these. If i attached a large sponge filter to my air pump would this provide an extensive amount of extra filtration? Say comparable to adding an extra HOB filter to my 150g tank? I have the largest tetra whisper pump i think its the tetra whisper 125? Just wondering as i dont see many people using this kind of filtration. I assume mostly because its unattractive...?

They are effective at creating biological filtration and also work well in a tank with small fry

I just installed a double sponge filter in each of my 10 gallon tanks. My first time using them so I have no history with them but I read quite a lot of good reviews.
