I can't find too much information on them. How would a sponge filter work if it is pushing air out of the sponge. Wouldn't the water need to be filtered through it instead so that the sponge collects the bacteria like a regular hang over filter?

Its confusing to me too. But it does work. Many peole and shops use them bc they're inexpensive and work. And good for fry tanks.
It somehow draws water through the sponge with the air

Yeah just did some reading. If they are used then it must work but it does seem very strange. As the bubbles are rising they are also pulling water through the sponge and up the tube. Weird but interested. I'll have to take a look at some and see if it would workout. Thanks for the information.
