worm castings?

I have a planted tank now (45 tall) with organic topsoil that I dislike (way too much wood = brown water)..so I got to wondering if worm castings would work since they are supposed to be great ferts for the garden. I have 2 new 10 gal tanks and plan on one being a grow out tank for shrimp/plants/moss rocks and am thinking of testing it unless someone knows for a fact it isn't worth the hassle?

You could easily solve the tannins in your water by adding purigen to the tank. That's what I did when I had issues in my planted tank and I have never seen the water clearer.
