Yellow tangs are indeed hardy but it is often recommended that they be the last fish in the tank as they can get rather territorial. I've had my yellow with a whole host of different fish (including percs and maroons) and the only one it bothered when I first added it was my purple tang (who went in after the YT). FWIW, my YT was one of the first fish I put into my tank after my cycle because the guy at the LFS said that they are so hardy you could cycle with them!
