Spectrum refers to, well, the spectrum of light. Kelvin (the K in 5,000k) refers to the color temp, which is related.

A 5,000k light will only grow algae, and definitely not coral.

What should the spectrum be at for corals? Doesn't white light contain all the colors of the spectrum making it white?

You should be looking at 10,000k lighting at the very lowest k rating. It has a good balance of white and blue. The more blue light you have the more colorful your coral will be while the more yellow the light is the more brown your corals will be.

You can grow coral with 5000k but it looks hideous.
