small qt/algae growing tank.

i want to get a 10 gal. and make it a qt/algae growing tank. what i want to ask however is if i can connect it to my current filter. i have a canister filter so i was thinking of just putting a three way hose connector. would this be ok or will the new water from the new tank mess up my other water? also. will i have to put live rock and live sand in the 10 gal. or can i just put a small sand bed with some dead coral? please respond. thank you

If you do this, it will not be a qt tank, it will be closer to a refugium.

whats a refugium? and i dont really want a qt, just someplace where i can keep algae and maybe some young fry. again my question is. will i have to cycle the new water? and if so will it damage my show tank's water if i do a two way connection with my filter.
