What's the deal with snails?

I asked about getting some apple snails at my LFS and they said they could not get them. The LFS guy said that he did not think they were illegal in California, but that they just could not get them due to import hassles.

He said most of the most popular snails they used to have, they can't get anymore.

Anybody know more about this?

I did a search on Yahoo Apple Snails California, seems according to the article above California isn't the only one that doesn't want these snails around.

hey, how long has this been for? about two or three weeks ago they had apple snails at Petco, but they have yet to get more...their shipments only have the other kinds of snails
