blasting sands

ok ive read about people taking black blasting sand and cleaning it and using it in there tanks and it works ive tried it on a 20 gal tank for my niece..but here is the question i have can i use garnite blasting sand its a redish pink color 30/60 grit there is no silicas in it they claim.. i want to use it in a shrimp tank if its possible want some color and dont want gravel
