why am i getting a brownish algae instead of green algae????

Well you don't want green algae What does the brown algae look like? It could be diatoms which are normal but rather ugly; they'll go away on their own. Is the water brown or is it on surfaces? Can you get a pic?

That's diatomes. A Google search will tell you everything you wanted to know about it but its most common in newly established tanks and goes away as quickly as it showed up.

+1^.......shrimps will get rid of that fast, but it will disappear either way
