Just thought that I would write that
so can you put a fish a diet.

Depnds on how often you feed them. If you feed them 3X a day then yes you can cut that back to just 1X a day and they wont suffer any ill effects. If you already only feed 1X a day then you could go to once every other day but you should make sure the fish's do get food when you feed.

Can't afford a SW marine tank or a reef system .

You can always cut back from what the fish are being fed. But it is best not to overfeed them in the first place since they won't stop eating while food is available. 8)
