I have PFS in my tank, and am curious about the cleaning. I have been reading that it can trap gases. Would a weekly gravel vac of the sand help prevent these gas pockets? Should I buy a cat fish?

Just take a chopstick or something like it and stir it up every few weeks. Malaysian trumpet snails are good for keeping it stirred as well.

Catfish (or other bottom dwellers) will only disturb that top layer of sand. MTS are great for stirring it to the bottom. I also stir the sand by using the gravel vac.

That really only applies to sand that is very flat and small, as it compacts like cement and can go anaerobic underneath... Round pebbley-type sand is less of a danger. You have to circulate fresh water there to prevent this... Like by poking it with a chopstick. Or getting snails that burrow... like those guys said.
