I think my betta damaged his fins on on some of the remaining plastic plants I had in there. Now there is only real plants in his tank. However, his tank is still gravel but I have enough sand to change it out if this will keep him from damaging his fins. Is it possible the gravel contributed to the damaged fins?

I've raised the temperature to 82 and I'll probably start doing daily water changes. Should I use a small concentration of salt to help his fins heal or is that unnecessary?

I don't think it could've been the gravel but there's a good chance it could've been the plastic plants. Does he have any tank mates? If the plastic plants were replaced with real plants and you're doing water changes a little salt couldn't hurt, just remember you're adding appropriate doses.

No tank mates and I changed to a sponge filter last week.

Well then I think he should be just fine, just a little patience and water changes is all :)
