Is it safe to use rubberbands in the aquarium?

I want to put a sponge over my filter intake, and I need something to hold it in place.

I use rubberbands. It may discolor/ not hold as good after a month or so, bit really, there are no problems. You will know when to replace it if needed, if at all, I could have maybe not tied it on well enough. It's fine so far though.

Yes, perfectly safe, but the rubber band will deteriorate over time. I use black plastic zip ties for this purpose.
