Just changed substrate to pool filter sand

Picked up two 50lb bag of PFS from Leslie's for 9.99 a bag. Brand was called Gillibrand

Poured the bag into buckets to clean. This is what it looks like dry

When wet.

It got really dirty milky looking when I first rinsed it

Started to clear up after a few stirs and dumps

Finally cleared up after a lot of washing

Here's my previous substrate, mixture of gravel and sand. The sand was too light colored and you can see all the poop from my Goldie's and Pleco. ( I did gravel vacced 2 days prior to this picture and look at the amount of poop they produce!)

Put my Goldie's into a tub

Water is a little cloudy but nothing too bad

Starting to clear up a little bit more

After a few hours everything is crystal clear! Couldn't be happier with the PFS. Looks a lot more natural than my previous sand and gravel.
Used a total of 1.5 bags (about 75lbs)
Looks like I'm getting about mostly 3 inches of substrate for my 55
gallon.

Yah I had to wait for my birthday to get that light. Big upgrade from the aqueon fluorescent deluxe hood lights.
Also had to buy a glass top when I switched to the finnex fugeray planted+

If your tank isn't planted, maybe try a beamswork light. Not finnex quality (which I also have) but it's pretty nice, well made, cheap, and lights the tank very well.

Also, from what I've read, sand is locally sourced, so the same brand of PFS in the east coast might not be the same color PFS in the west coast. Luckily the worker at Leslie's was nice enough to let me see a sample of the sand. I've heard of this same brand of PFS ending up being a grey color in other areas.
I bought this sand from the Bay Area, California
