Interesting one this . Presuming the bloke is pretty well equipped and experienced enough in fish in general, I'd guess it's just been interbred maybe ?

Call me mad, but it looks very much like a Gold Gourami, bar the triangular pattern on the lower half of gills and without the 'feelers' . :?:
 
Well I have 2 golds and I did what you said I compared them and it just dosn't seem to fit. I can see where you are coming from but the head shape is all wrong. Not that your not right , just my observation.
 
I don't know, I still think they're very much alike, apart from the things I mentioned earlier.
One thing I have noticed on a second comparison is the mouth seems far too oversize for a gold gourami, but depending on how / what its been bred with, I spose anything is possible.
