I just use the poly fil from Walmart, the stuff in bag from crafts dept. just make sure there's no chemicals in it. Cut a piece to size, rinse in water and put in filter as a polishing pad between the foam and rings.

No problem. Does the job great and a heck of a lot cheaper than pre filter and polishing pads from the store! Think a bag of this is like $5? But you get a ton of it!

I picked up a fluvall prefilter sponge just goes over filter intake tube. I think it was either an edge or chi or whatever it was only 2.99 at pet smart

And today after first water change with sand it wasn't difficult at all.
