substrate depth for apisto's

30 gallon tank, sand substrate, will be stocking with cardinal's and apistos (gbr's and double full red's). how deep should the substrate be ideally? i want this to eventually lead to the apisto's breeding.

3" should be fine, no real need for it to be any deeper. They literally pick the gravel up with their mouths and move it.

I'd go with something in the 1 1/2 to 2 inch range, unless you need it a bit deeper for live plants.
