I've now obviously increased my capcity and wanted to re open for suggestions if anything different would be suggested :)

alos I saw a sand substrate tank the other day and was rather inpressed.

Can I plant plants straight into sand?

If so what are my options on low light plants? As I'm limited on light options at moment due to budget (it's called the girlfriend lol)

yes plants can go right into the sand for the most part. some plants shouldnt go in sand or gravel though. what kind of lighting do you have right now?

Its just a single tube the length (4ft) of the tank at the moment I havent had a good look at what it is yet.

prob only 40w. i would at least put some shop lights over it and go with low light plants like anubias and java ferns.
