Filters and stockage

Ok, so I have had a hang on filter for my salt water fish tank for about two years, but recently I heard box filters were better. I am confused on who to trust. Also, does anybody have any good ideas on stocking ideas for fish and corals? Thanks

I have a 55 gallon with a clownfish, cardinal, engineer goby, regal tang, and three peppermint shrimp. I also have about 4 corals. I have two seperate t-5 lightening systems, two bulbs each
