Have you thought about fishless cylcing? Its good in that no fish must suffer in too much ammonia/nitrite. Its easily done with household ammonia I believe. I don't remember the recipe, its a few drops a day.... do a search for it. Is it frustrating not to have fish in your tank for a few weeks, absolutely. But its much nicer for the fish, and gives you time to figure out exactly which fishy you want. HTH
Bad idea on the Golfish They do produce a lot of ammonia, however they are not very hardy and should not be used to cycle a tank. Also, 1 Goldfish in a 10g tank is a full bioload...
