After a tank has cycled, how long should one wait before cleaning the HOB sponge filter for the first time?

The concern is disturbing a new cycle too soon and setting off an issue.

if you just rinse it in old tank water when you do a pwc you will be fine, just don't let it get dry

Changing the media out completely or cleaning it in old tank water?

Unless it's falling apart there's no need to change it out completely. They can become filled with gunk though so it should be ok to swish it out in old tank water. I've done this to all of my filter media at once and it didn't cause an issue, so I think you'll be OK. If you're worried just clean some of the media at a time and test the water for a day or two afterwards but I don't foresee any problems just from cleaning it as long as the water is either old tank water or dechlorinated tap water.

Cleaning the sponge, not replacing.

Replys make perfect sense, I'll clean it in old tank water at my next water change.

Thanks for the replies.......
