It is an older and I believe custom built tank. 12 inches high, 12 inches deep, and comes out to 27.8 gallons. Anyway, I have it set up and planted with power head, driftwood and HOB filter. Water parameters and plants are set to amazonian/black water same for the temperature. I have 5 x-ray tetras and 6 marbled hatchet fish. My question is main fish. I was thinking angel fish but had heard that they need at least 18 inches of vertical height. Any thing/ any other suggestions?

I don't know your tank style setup or angels, but I'd suggest going to the link below and see if you get any answers.
