Pennplax cascade 700 won't prime

Hi
I have a 180 litre tank which i have just added a new pennplax cascade 700 external filter. I'm having real problems with getting it to prim. I have followed the instructions using the self prime and filled the filter manually but just cant get it to prime. All it does it pump for a minute and then stop.

What should i do??

I had a nightmare of a time with my Cascade 1200 as well! The self primer is worthless in my opinion. Just bite the bullet and suck on the output hose to get it filled. I know it isn't pleasant, but it'll only take you a few seconds rather than banging your head against the wall for hours like I did.

Are both of your valves open? Are there any kinks in the lines? I have 2 pennplax canisters and I've never really had a problem with them.
