Question about the guide for the fishless cycle

The guide is under the saltwater variety. 2 questions

1. Does it make a difference?

2. If it does make a difference what needs to be changed to accommodate for a fresh water tank.

I am going through cycling fishlessly - right now I am frustrated (WHEN is that nitrite going to start going down?!) but it is a lot better than the heartache of putting fish through this stress!
