rena filter with dead pump

When i got my 75g tank a few days ago, it came with a rena xp1 filter. It's too small for the tank and the pump is dead. Would it be okay to hook an inline water pump up to it and use it as a secondary filter.

i wouldnt... i would invest in a nice canister like a fluval 405 and forget about rigging up a possible disaster. if you can get the motor fixed (or there may be some trick to them from somebody with experience with that filter), it would be a good filter for a qt or a small tank if you set one up.. btw, thats jmo

Well I got the pump working, a wire had come loose to the motor and after 2 hours of cursing to get into the body, fix it, test it, and seal it back up. It worked. Just curious, why would the water pump be a bad idea? Anyway, a few dollars saved.
