wouldn't medicine help though if it was why he was doing it? and is there a way to help it?

No, it really wouldn't. If it happened while he was young (fry) there would be no cure if it grew as he grew while it was already enlarged. Kinda like when a baby is born and the mother feeds it her milk and there's something in her milk that is bad and the baby can't fight off. Sometimes they die, or they have a defect for the rest of their life. My thought is if he's ok in a smaller amount of water I'd leave him in smaller amount. Just do a few extra water changes. And in the mean time check into different types of meds. Maybe to add to the water, for the rest of his life. Or maybe even try an air stone see what that will do. The more air in the water might help. But I don't think so. It would be something to try though.
